Hello Gurus,
I am a VC++ program with 3 years of experience I need some help from your experience.
I know COM/DCOM little bit. and want to learn JAVA (currently I don't have any experience with JAVA), but I am confused about what will be benifit for me. If I will study COM/DCOM then will it give me good helping hand for my career or the JAVA will give me that hand?
Thanks
Chetan

It really depends. Both technologies are hot
and wanted. Java seems to be more of a corporate
technology for business applications while
COM is more general. One can use COM to develop
components for business applications or to
develop system software.
COM and DCOM are much harder to master then
Java and there is less competition around.
Thus in my opinion an expert in COM/DCOM
is worth more then a Java expert. Then again
Java fits better in business software because
it is clean (plus modelled perfectly with UML),
safe, easy and portable.

When looking ahead in my career, I always look for skills that are marketable and competion is low. Everyone knows VB. Everyone knows or will know Java. So salaries will remain low since employers can get a kid out of school really cheap. If you are planning on independant consulting working for yourself, that might change things. Component technology is here to stay so I'll have to vote for COM/DCOM. Its harder to pick up. You can command higher rate/salary. And it will keep you interested longer - e.g., COM+
Hope this helps.

My response is:
If you have experience in VC, COM/DCOM is a plus. And why not study COM/DCOM via Visual J++? You can construct components, and leverage youc VC++ knowledge, using a similar language, with access to Windows, with an interactive UI designer (not more in MFC, toto!)
COM/DCOM is the greates thing since sliced bread!
