It's a good motivation to know if your job makes sense.

I have MS VC++, PC, some free time and some experience in coding.

So, if somebody

- has an idea how free software can help the mankind, :-)

- but can't make it alone

- and needs a companion,

I would be happy to volunteer my contribution.

I am the sort of what you meant.

I do have MS VC++, PC, some free time and some experience in coding.

So, I am here waiting for your contribution.

I could not find an option in this forum to post top level question.

Actually my question is very simple. I am planning a trip to the

States but can't find Sillicon Valley in any travekers book. So

where exactly and what are the limits of Sillicon Valley (on

which side of which big towns f.examp. San Francisco,

Los Angeles) is it?

I'm not a programmer,but I love coding with the visual c++&MFC.

Sometimes I write some little program for fun.I'd like to share the

code with anybody.I think we are the same.I will wait for you replay.

I have several ideas we could consider:

1. Software for navigation in space using known space charts and maps (a contribution to growing amateur space programme)

2. Earthquake "early warning" control system software

Hi,

Both your ideas sound very interesting.

Are there people who need that? This question is about what has to be done (who knows what has to be done?). I'd like to start it right now...

Probably these ideas require input of many programmers (or programmers-amateurs :-) ) and there's a lot of free space for programmers-amateurs.

Who does want to be a manager of this project?

Ok, here's another good idea for those who dislike science

and are more business oriented:

Error log.

=======

Huge software systems as well as corporate system

composed of many small software pieces encounter

errors/warnings regularry. When testing new software

it would also be usable to be able to automatically log

errors on central place on the network.

After errors are logged (more advanced way then the

archaic NT Event Log should be used, a tree would be

natural choice) the statistical reports could be generated

from the log and critical (badly written) pieces of code shown.

Reports would also show other useful thingies like for example

bad user interface design if many users would repeat

same common error/warning.

This software could be composed of:

1. An error server running on NT or Unix

2. Clients in Java/Windows/X Windows

3. Libraries for easier error reporting (COM, CORBA, DLL, Beans...)

4. Documentation describing open standards

Is there a website we could use for projects like this.

This year we had an earthquaqe in my country and my goverment said that

it doesn't have money to buy better system so if we could provide solution

for that...

The amateur space programme is also in rise in the US an around the

world and Glenns return to space will contribute. The new satellite on

ion propulsion is carrying such authonomus navigation system (navigation

using star maps). Soon amateurs will be able to launch vehicles to

orbite. And we could give them ability to navigate so that the next

step ( you know, amateurs go to planets...:-) ) will be quicker.

Does this project has any use of 3D graphics, if yes then I would like to implement my knowledge of OpenGL to it.

You could join an existing Open Source project that interests you.

I know there aren't many such projects being implemented on Windows,

but one possibility is porting something cool to Windows.

I don't know about helping mankind (to really help mankind, work for the environment and peace, against corporate control of our government

oops wrong forum, sorry), but here are some possible projects

- write a file manager that contains all the good features

of the many shareware managers

- write a tweak UI type program that contains all the good features

of the myriad tweak programs

- work on litestep (www.litestep.net)

- a Visio-clone

- a flexible, powerful, and complete Edit Control

- a true object-oriented GUI framework

- an analog & digital simulation system using VHDL-AMS

Most importantly, I think, any project should be Open Source (www.opensource.org). It's silly that there are 50 shareware file

managers out there when, if the source for one was available, anyone

could contribute improvements and bug-fixes.

Hi,

On the CodeGuru homepage there's a link to the newsgroups under the Interact header.

Well I was under the impression that the queries that I post there would be listed in the specified newsgroup[vc.mfc] which I have chosen. But the strange thing is that although my name and my query appears on the Codeguru's link to the newsgroup site, it is no where to be seen on the mfc mailing list. I have been sending and replying so many queries put up on the newsgroups thinking that I am accessible to the newsgroup but, when I actually go and see the messages on the mfc newsgroups I can't find my messages or any replies.

Could someone let me know wheter I am the only one facing this problem? I fnot then what's idea behind this newsgroup link?

Go for the Astronomy-Space-Navigation project for starters.

I believe the Eartquake early warner is'nt possible yet as we need heaps more hardware eg sensors and probes. Seismic test results before we can start it. Just my Opinion

Another thought:

Have you ever noticed the birds stop singing about 40 to 50 seconds before a

big Shake.... ?

I've been told the equake sound travels faster than the earth tremor.

In the USA I believe they now have lightning warning systems around parks and sportsfields that measure ?? static elicticity ??

Maybe they could do the same in densly populated urban areas for earthquakes ?

They have the greatest risk and would cover the greatest population base ??

I think this idea is the most appropriate suggestion so far, and I'm glad to see you're making a start. I would contribute but I'm busy writing my PhD thesis (besides, I'm not that hot at MFC yet).

For those of us who cannot contribute to the project, is there anywhere where we can get updates of the project's progress so far? I've just finished reading 'Clouds to Code' by Jesse Liberty (Wrox Press) and found it interesting to see the processes involved in the development of a large piece of software. Perhaps one extra contribution to mankind (or at least the proportion of mankind that write software) would be for you to document the decisions and progress of the project as it goes along. This would allow others contribute to the design of the software as well possibly helping with the code and also help the less experienced of us learn to design good software.

"Me" in this case means Zafir or I, or just "webmaster@codeguru.com"

That's not "new" unless you consider a rewrite of Unix theory to be "new".

What I would like to see is a a completely new OS written from the ground up

with all that has been learned about computer design and OS's. Sort of like

What? You want to create a fully preemptive multitasking,

multithreading, message passing OS?

You want real plug and play?

You want multiple screen resolutions at the same time?

And, you want it all to run in less than a megabyte?

Why?

Hello, so much people,

Don't you want to create a C++ compiler for microcontrollers ? (MCS-51, AVR, ...)
There is some C compilers but no C++ compilers (or too expensive). I'm sure this is an excellent work for a such team.
I have some ideas on for this topic and some others. Let me know if you haven't found a good project and you are interested in this one.
