Before I continue, let it be known that I know almost nothing about .NET. In my searches, I have found specific code examples and broad generalities using the latest buzzwords, but nothing in between.

My understanding of .NET is that it is similar to DCOM except that the components (or services) can be used across the web. Example: I could use a calculator program that connects to a math component on some remote server; my system asks another system for the answer to 1+1.

I remember hearing somewhere that Microsofts' goal was to release all of their products as web-based .NET services. Ultimately they would most likely begin renting these services instead of selling them. Welcome to our 'brave new world' where nobody really owns anything. And, of course, you will not be able to use Word whenever your Internet connection is ever down. Is this true?

Someone please help me understand the goal of .NET.
