Does anyone know what effect MS's .NET framework is going to have on the use of Visual InterDev? I have heard that MS is doing away with InterDev.

Tom Archer August 11th, 2000, 09:23 AM As the author of not only a .NET book, but also what has become the best selling Web development book on Visual InterDev, there are two issues here: 1) Future of VID It's gone. Short and not so sweet, but VID is gone when .NET ships. It's interesting though that the Visual Studio .NET interface is almost completely taken from VID, but with the integration of .NET tools with VS .NET, VID simpy isn't necessary. 2) Impact now .NET won't come close to shipping for at least another year, therefore VID is definitely the best development platform for IIS-based Web applications until that point. I was at a Barnes and Noble book yestrady and saw in a combination package your two 24 hour books, the InterDev one and the ASP one. I didn't buy them because I couldn't get a look inside them. Just got out of Amazon's site and read the customer's reviews on those books, very good reviews so I will be going back to the store and getting them today. Tom Archer August 11th, 2000, 09:54 AM Thanks Jim! Let me know if you have any questions once you get the book. Great book! You mentioned in an earlier reply that with the release of .NET (VS 7) that VID will no longer be around but the interface of .NET is taken from it. For those projects developed using VID 6, will they still be able to be used (edited, compile, etc.) using the .NET envioroment tools? tcabanski November 21st, 2000, 05:00 AM It's kind of like a song I remember for catholic school: "Praise God from Whom all Blessings Flow" Visual Interdev is certainly the best way to develop ASP. However, it is by no means an excellent application development tool. It's certainly easier than C++ development but VB blows it away. No reflection on Interdev, it's really the ASP programming model that gets in the way. VisualStudio.NET changes all of that with a platform that pulls the best of VB visual design into the realm of Internet development. I think it's going to be very intersting and productive. codeguru.com
