XML w/ large amount of data

I'm considering doing my next project in XML. It will be run off an intranet. How does XML's speed compare to SQL Server (for example) with large amounts of data (~20-30k records)?

Any comments would be appreciated..

Well, XML is not intended to replace database servers, would you replace your SQL Server with CSV files?

Surely you are aware that it is against the licensing agreement from Microsoft that you are not allowed to publish any performance statistics for SQL Server? I presume this even includes comparing it favourably with XML.... ;O)
