How do i get a file from the server and save it to the client machine

Hi e'body,
I have a problem. i actually generate a gif file on the server and have it stored on the server. i have to open this on the client machine to save it and can anybody help me in what shud i do to send the file to the client machine and make him select whr to save the file.
i mean this looks like the opposite to upload to server process. can i use the same code we use to upload files to the server.
please help.
